The annual scientific conference of the European Elasmobranch Association 2020 will be held in Leiden, the Netherlands between 28th and 30th October, 2020. Venue is the fascinating Naturalis Biodiversity Center.
We plan to present you with a stimulating program bringing together the latest in elasmobranch science and new insight in conservation policy. We have chosen as overriding theme for the conference:
Are we there yet?
What changes in the science and policy landscape have delivered for elasmobranch conservation
When the EEA was set up more than 20 years ago, the situation with respect to management and conservation of elasmobranchs was concerning. Many species were in decline or had populations at historically low levels and endangered species were offered little protection. There were no agreed limits for fisheries management. Species-specific knowledge was sadly lacking.
A concerted effort by conservationists around Europe, and an improved science-base, have led to a substantial increase in protective management measures aimed at improving the status of sharks and rays in Europe, but are we there yet? What have these changes yielded under water?
The conference will address this and sessions will cover, but are not limited to: science-base for conservation and management; challenges in data poor situations; life-history and population dynamics; movement ecology; coherence in international legislation and policy; selectivity, survival, and discards of elasmobranchs in fisheries; and future perspectives. We have invited internationally renowned keynote speakers to introduce the sessions.
Looking forward to seeing you in Leiden!
Best wishes from the EEA2020 team
– Paddy, Linda, and Irene
