The beautiful city of Leiden has an centuries-old city center with canals, city gates, bridges, windmills, a castle, an observatory, and various historical buildings. It is also home to the oldest university in the Netherlands. Plenty of hotels are found in the Leiden city center area, so you’re sure to find something within walking distance of the conference venue that fits your budget. We suggest several accommodations close to the conference venue.
- The Tulp Inn Leiden Centre hotel (***) lies within a 15-minute walk from Naturalis Biodiversity Center. A standard room rate is under €100,-/night. The hotel is eco-certified.
- Hotel De Doelen is an ancient Patrician mansion built in 1638, and located at the Rapenburg canal, 15 minutes walking distance from the conference venue. Room rates are around €90,-/night, and the hotel has a very affordable good breakfast.
- Boutique Hotel Steenhof Suites is situated a little further from the conference venue, but is a beautiful hotel with its own fitness center, bar, lounge, and garden. The room rates are around €100,-/night.
- Bed and Breakfast de Pelgrimsplaats is a very highly-rated venue in the city with room rates around €110,-/night and a wonderful breakfast included. The hotel is situated within 15 minutes by bus, or 20 minutes walking.

Traveling to Leiden from Schiphol Airport by train:
From the Schiphol Airport train station, you take a single train to Leiden Central station. You can purchase a €7,30 ticket at a machine on the station, or you can pre-purchase a ticket online for a €1,- discount at www.ns.nl/en/

Naturalis has two entrances. Darwinweg 2 coming by foot or public transport and Mendelweg 2 coming by car or bike.
The conference venue is located within walking distance of Leiden Centraal train station. The walking route from the station is clearly marked with signs.
But public transportation is faster (~5 mins). You can take bus 30, 31, or 38 towards Katwijk (ESA ESTEC).

An easy way to get around Leiden is as the locals do: by bicycle. Biking in Leiden is safe and easy, thanks to the flat landscape and wide bike lanes. You will find several bike rental shops throughout the city. Just be sure to always properly lock your bike!
The weather in the Netherlands in notorious for being consistently inconsistent at any time during the year and October is no exception. The day can start out sunny, only to quickly give way to showers and occasional gusty storms. On average you can expect lots of grey days, some sunny days, and some rain.
